What is Counseling?
The primary purpose of counseling is to empower the client to deal adequately with life situations, reduce stress, experience personal growth, and well-informed, rational decisions. The American Counseling Association defines professional counseling as “a collaborative effort between a counselor and a client that seeks to identify goals and potential solutions to problems that cause various levels of distress”. Professional Counselors offer the caring, expert assistance that can be supportive during stressful times. A counselor can assist you in creating a more meaningful life by helping you identify your emotional needs, reduce your life stressors and enhance your strengths. They help you to develop new coping skills and use healthy ways to solve problems.
What is a Counseling session?
Each counseling sessions is 50-60 minutes. During the session, your counselor or therapist will use established and research based “talk” therapies. Your session will be a truly client-centered approach to therapy where you can talk about your issues in a safe, peaceful, empathetic, respectful and compassionate environment.
Who will be involved in my sessions?
Counseling sessions may involve individuals, couples, or families. They may also include participants who may be involved in your situation such as spouses, children, parents, significant others, etc. This will allow you to work with those directly involved in your situation, should you and your therapist agree that their participation is appropriate.
What outcome can I expect from Counseling?
Professional counselors help clients understand the underlying contributors to stress, anxiety and depression. The goal is healing rather than suppression of your problems. Your therapist will not make decisions for you; they will assist you in making life changes and understanding any foreseeable risk(s) and impact on you and others. In addition, your counselor may suggest alternatives to therapy so that you can make well-reasoned decisions about your treatment. You may also be referred to other health care professionals as your therapist deems necessary to enhance your therapy experience.
